The Phoenix Nest: About the Name
A Phoenix is an ancient mythical being – a majestic bird - that is cyclically remade from the ashes of its earlier self. At various intervals throughout its life, it bursts into flame, and then re-hatches, a baby bird again, from the ashes of the earlier fire. While the Phoenix is a myth, it represents something powerful. Namely that we, as humans and as groups, go through cycles of transition many times throughout our lives. These continual periods of transformation (big and small) include moving to a new city, starting a new job, taking on a new life role (e.g. becoming a parent, spouse, etc.), entering a new phase of life, taking on a new venture or set of responsibilities, or a group taking on a new identity or structure.
During these times of transition, we must make decisions about what elements it is time to leave behind, and what we want to carry forward. We are often at our most vulnerable during these times of transition; they can be challenging, disorienting, and confusing. This transition place is also the space in which we have the greatest opportunity to make positive change – to reexamine what we value and what we want, to explore new goals, and practice new habits that will help us flourish as we strive to reach them. The Phoenix Nest works with people and organizations to help them do this.
